MRI Coverage of HMO: How Much is the Limit?

We are used to hearing the term MRI scan and relate it to a serious disease. However, this is not true because the test is simply done to diagnose any types of problems in the internal organs, tissues and bones. Yes, it is expensive, that’s why health card holders ask whether their HMO can cover the cost.

Is MRI Covered by Health Cards?

In the Philippines, MRI coverage by HMO has a certain amount limit based on your plan. See the list of health cards and their coverage amount.

  • Etiqa – MyLife+ Plan covers MRI
  • Medicard – Up to Php 5,000 coverage
  • Maxicare – MRI is covered based on plan type (accredited hospitals and doctors only)
  • Philcare – Inner limit of Php 5,000
  • Valucare – MRI is covered up to Php 5,000 per session

How Much is MRI

In the Philippines, the price of MRI starts from Php 5,800 and above depending on the body part that requires it. Your doctor will specify whether you need plain or with contrast. The plain type is cheaper than with contrast.

Mayo Clinics describes MRI as a medical test that uses magnetic fields to produce computerized images of body parts. It is suitable to diagnose different health conditions and illnesses such as cancer.

How Many Times Can I Use My Card?

We learned that many of these HMOs will only cover MRI at a limited amount per year per illness. For example, you can use your card to cover the first scan. However, you may need to pay in cash for the second MRI if the doctor prescribed it again within the year.

It is best to look at the fine print of your health card plan to see the price of MRI covered within a specific period. Look for other medical tests covered by HMO to prepare your budget.

Is MRI Benefit Transferable?

Only the health card owner will be able to use the benefit. However, if you have dependents under your primary account, they too can enjoy coverage for MRI.
