Most health cards will not cover pregnancy as a medical condition. However, some plans can cover prenatal and postnatal expenses, room and board and complications arising from giving birth.

You may want to compare the HMO price list before you choose a card for maternity costs.

Just like with any other health cards, you simply need to bring your card or present account details to avail the benefits. A valid ID may also be needed to confirm the identity of the enrolled individual.

Some health plans will require a waiting period of 1 year before the benefits become available. On the other hand, those with revolving fund features may provide coverage upon account activation, usually within 24 hours.

While maternity services and expenses may not be covered directly, some health plans may reimburse a part of hospital fees related to complications. This could be a separate criteria after giving birth.

The amount to be covered will be based on the MBL as long as an accredited doctor has approved treatment, test or medication.

Personal Experience:

One of my friends just gave birth last month and she was able to use a health card. The plan covered the surgery since it was a Cesarean section. However, her expenses for the operating room were not included in the benefits.

Room and board were also covered that reached up to Php 7,000. It was not bad at all considering that we usually find health cards without maternity coverage.
