Animal Bite Coverage of Health Cards: Protection from Rabies

You are not 100% safe. No one can predict when you will get bitten by a stray animal or your domesticated pet. That’s why it is good to know whether your current or target HMO can cover animal bites. Let’s see what your options are.

Here is a list of HMOs with animal bite coverage and its related expenses.

Maxicare

Offers treatment for minor injuries due to animal bites. You can go to their primary care clinics to receive medical help and vaccination. However, severe cases may require you to proceed to a partner hospital of the HMO.

Medicard

This HMO covers anti rabies vaccine depending on your plan benefits. You may also go to their free standing clinics for treatment. The cost of vaccine will also be covered if you go to an ER but you will shoulder administrative cost.

iCare (ER Care Basic 50, prepaid)

This is one of the most affordable health cards that I found when it comes to animal bite coverage. It includes emergency room treatment and the first does of vaccination.

Before you choose a plan, remember these factors to guide you which health card is ideal for your needs.

ER Benefits

Animals are unpredictable and even your pets can suddenly attack you when provoked. This means that your injuries, wound and bleeding may come in various forms. Most of them will require a trip to emergency room to stop the bleeding and treat them.

Select a health plan with good ER benefits and a wide coverage of medical treatment.

Vaccination

There are two primary vaccines that you may need after an animal bite: anti rabies and anti tetanus. The doctor will advice you whether you need both or just the anti-rabies based on your wound.

Find an HMO with anti-rabies and anti-tetanus coverage.
